Job Title: Before & After School Teacher- Pre-K (3-5) Program: Early Childhood Education Classification: Part Time, Full Time - Non-Exempt Location: All sites; Washington, DC; MD Reports to: Early Childhood Program Director Job Summary: The Before and After School Teacher will provide a safe, healthy and nurturing environment for the children, that offers opportunities for learning and development in the different areas through the implementation of a developmentally appropriate high quality program for three to five year olds. Essential responsibilities: Professionalism: Arrive on time and ready to begin workFollow all policies as outlined in the employee handbookFollow all health and safety procedures as outlined in handbook and in licensing and health regulationsWork cooperatively with all staff membersDevelop a positive team relationship co-workersDemonstrate a positive attitudeBe flexible with assignments and schedule when necessaryUse appropriate avenues for reporting concerns and/or airing grievancesCommunicate directly and avoid gossipBe open to suggestions for growth/approach criticism with learning attitude Learning environment:Before children start the program, assist in setting up the environment based on the curriculum selected Teacher-child interaction:Build relationships with each child by welcoming children each day, engaging in conversations and responding to their needsGuide children's learning by talking about their work, providing additional information to extend their learning, and asking open-ended questionsEngage children in age-appropriate activities that support the Early Learning Standards Weekly Lesson plans:Develop weekly lesson plans based on children's interests and developmental level Family Involvement: Develop a relationship with the family members who come into the program by greeting each person, learning their names, and listening to the things they would like to shareCommunicate on a daily basis with parents, either in person, written form, or by telephoneCommunicate with parents with respect and in a professional manner Professional Development:Develop a professional portfolioKeep the portfolio up to date with training certificates, copies of lesson plans and significant achievementsIdentify areas for professional growthLocate and attend workshops, training events, resources that support professional growth areasPursue professional development by enrolling in higher education programsApply new knowledge into the classroom setting to build competenceMaintain CDA credential current Health and Safety:To monitor the health, safety, physical and emotional welfare of the children when they arrive. To ensure the well-being of children at all times, being alert to their strengths and needs as individuals and as a group. To keep the children under adult supervision at all times.To be alert to changes in behavior, clothing (by checking if they need to change it, if it is appropriate to the weather outside, if the shoelaces are tied, etc.) and physical appearance (by checking if their noses need to be wiped, if their hands or faces need to be washed, etc.) throughout the day.To assist the children during the period of breakfast, lunch and snack, by encouraging them to eat, helping them with utensils and foods, promoting communication among them, and encouraging appropriate table manners.To help the children rest and monitor their sleep during the period of naptime.To maintain the home-base clean, free of hazards, with the materials in order, and aesthetically pleasing. To display child's work in a neat and respectful manner. Other Duties:To be familiar with and abide by the personnel policies and the program procedures specified in the "employment manual" and the "staff handbook". To manage the guidance and discipline of the group according to the center policies.To keep the families informed of accidents and incidents by filling out accident and/or incident reports when needed and keeping the administration informed.To report to the coordinator and director any special needs or concerns about the children and staff. To report to the coordinator and director any suspicion of external or internal child abuse or neglect immediately after the incident occurred.To attend the regularly scheduled team planning and meetingsTo deal with conflicts or difficult situations with the group's educators with the support of the program coordinator and director when needed.To attend to CentroNia trainings as schedule by direct supervisor.To check shared areas such as bathroom, playgrounds, and van for health and safety hazards.To ensure that families sign the daily log when the children are dropped off and picked up.To accompany the child when he/she is being picked up late, even after the work day is over.To submit leave requests to the coordinator/director for approval before the absence. Key Qualifications - Required experience and education Two or more years' experience in the care and education of young children in a group care setting.CDA for preschool age children.Bilingual (English-Spanish / Spanish-English) highly preferred.HS Diploma or GED equivalentEffective communication skills.Flexibility in regards to schedules, sharing of tasks and changes in routines and plans. Expected Work hours: A maximum of 40 hours a week. Travel: Some traveling is expected for this position.
