Howard University College of Arts and Sciences Appoints Three New Distinguished Faculty

WASHINGTON -- Three distinguished faculty have joined Howard University’s College of Arts and Sciences. Thomas Foster, Ph.D., has been appointed associate dean for Faculty Affairs and full professor in the Department of History.  Kim Michelle Lewis, Ph.D., has been appointed associate dean for Research and Graduate Programs and full professor in the Department of Physics.  Bourama Toni, Ph.D, has been appointed full professor and chair of the Department of Mathematics.

Their appointment took effect Jan. 1, 2018.

Foster earned his doctoral degree in history from Johns Hopkins University. He formerly served as a professor in the department of

history and the department chair from 2011-2017.

Foster said in a statement from the university. 

Lewis, a graduate in physics from Dillard University received her master’s degree in electrical engineering and doctoral degree in applied physics from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

“This is an extraordinary opportunity to contribute to the legacy of Howard University’s research program and graduate school and impact the student body in the College of Arts and Sciences,” Lewis said.

Toni formerly served as a professor of mathematics at Virginia State University and visiting professor of mathematics and applied mathematics at Brown University. For the last three years, he has been visiting researcher in applied mathematics at Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in Newport, Rhode Island and visiting professor at Peking University, Beijing and Xi’an Jiaotong University, Xi’an, China.

“I am honored to join the iconic institution that is Howard University and look forward to contributing to the success of the department in education, teaching, research and service to the community,” Toni said.
