20,000 Runners Set to Sprint Around Capital

About 21,000 runners are expected to go 13.1 or 26.2 miles at the SunTrust Rock ‘n’ Roll USA Marathon & CareFirst Rock ‘n’ Roll USA Half Marathon on Saturday, March 17.

This is the 26th stop in an international series of entertainment-themed races organized by The Competitor Group, Inc. (CGI). The series, which started in San Diego in 1998, incorporates lining race routes for marathons and half-marathons with live bands and vendors at each mile.  Starting and finishing at RFK Stadium on Saturday, participants will run through the nation’s capital, past Union Station and the National Mall with a view of the White House, and along the Anacostia River.

As runners join their friends and family at the finish line festival, the Grammy Award-winning rock band Switchfoot will be headlining the post-race concert outside RFK stadium.

More than 70 exhibitors will offer free samples and showcase the latest in running gear, sports apparel and health and nutritional information from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the D.C. Armory, 2001 East Capitol St. S.E. . Runners can also visit the expo to pick up race numbers, swag bags and T-shirts.

Organizers are seeking volunteers to fill 1,900 positions. For more information, visit: http://runrocknroll.competitor.com/usa/volunteer.

The events benefit charities such as the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Team Activities for Special Kids (TASK) and Prostate Cancer Foundation.
